Description
Springtime brings blossoms, sunshine and for Bahá’ís around the world, the joyous twelve-day festival of Ridván. This commemorates Bahá’u’lláh’s announcement of his mission in a garden in Baghdad, and it’s a perfect occasion to gather family and friends for reflection, unity… and baking! Our Ridván Flower Cookies are a sweet way to celebrate the spirit of kindness, beauty, and community that Ridván inspires.
Why Flower Cookies for Ridván?
Just as Ridván means “paradise,” these delicate flower-shaped cookies remind us of gardens in bloom. Inviting children to help shape and decorate each bloom not only sparks creativity but also opens a conversation about the Bahá’í teachings of unity and appreciation for the natural world. As petals press into icing or edible blossoms adorn each cookie, little hands learn to work together and big hearts savor the sweetness of shared moments.
Gather Your Ingredients & Tools
You’ll need basic pantry staples (flour, butter, sugar, egg, vanilla) and a few fun extras:
-
Flower-shaped cookie cutters
-
Edible flower petals or colorful sprinkles
-
Food coloring for tinting icing
-
Rolling pin, parchment-lined baking sheet, and a wire rack
Step-by-Step Baking Adventure
-
Whisk Together Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, stir 2¼ cups all-purpose flour with ½ teaspoon baking powder and ¼ teaspoon salt. Set aside. -
Cream Butter & Sugar
In a large bowl, beat ¾ cup unsalted butter and 1 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy about 2–3 minutes. Small chefs can take turns flipping the switch and watching the mixer whirl. -
Add Egg & Extracts
Crack in 1 large egg. Stir in 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract (and ½ teaspoon almond extract, if you like) until smooth. Encourage kids to sniff the vanilla—they’ll love that fragrant moment! -
Combine & Chill Dough
Gradually mix in the flour mixture until a soft dough forms. Shape into a disk, wrap in plastic, and chill for 30 minutes. This gives everyone a break to review Ridván facts or share favorite memories of spring. -
Roll & Cut
Preheat the oven to 350 °F. Flour a countertop and roll dough to ¼″ thickness. Stamp out flower shapes and transfer them to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Older helpers can handle the hot oven; younger ones can grate extra flour for cleanup! -
Bake & Cool
Bake 8–10 minutes until edges are just golden. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. -
Mix & Color Icing
Stir 2 cups powdered sugar with ½ teaspoon vanilla and just enough milk or lemon juice to make a thick, pourable icing. Divide into bowls and tint pale pink, yellow, and green. -
Decorate & Celebrate
Flood each cookie with a thin layer of icing. Press an edible flower petal into the center or sprinkle gently. Let set for 1 hour while you listen to the Ridván episode of Faithfully Explore!
Ridván Reflection & Togetherness
While the icing dries, gather around and ask: What does Ridván mean to you? How can we show unity and kindness, just like the Bahá’í teachings encourage? A simple question can bloom into rich conversation, reminding young bakers that baking and belief are sweetest when shared.
Tips for Success
-
If petals aren’t available, festive sprinkles work beautifully.
-
To save time, prepare icing colors in advance and store under damp paper towels.
-
Invite each family member to name a friendship-bridge idea—an action that brings people closer, just as Ridván does.
These Ridván Flower Cookies are more than a treat. They are a hands-on lesson in shared joy, a way to connect to faith through creativity, and a delicious reminder that beauty—and unity—flourish when we bloom together.
