Extend the Learning
Start a Moon Journal
Observe the Moon at approximately the same time each evening for two to four weeks. Children can sketch its appearance, record the date and time, and note where it appears in the sky. If the Moon is not visible, record possible reasons such as clouds, the observation time, or the Moon’s position.
Model the Moon’s Phases
Darken a room and use a lamp as the Sun and a foam ball as the Moon. Have the child stand as Earth and slowly turn while holding the ball at arm’s length. Watch how the illuminated portion appears to change even though half of the ball remains lit.
Build a Moon-Phase Sequence
Create cards showing the eight major phases, mix them up, and ask children to arrange them in order. Older students can label each phase as waxing or waning and explain how they know.
Compare Lunar Calendars

Helpful Teaching Reminder
Children often believe that Earth’s shadow causes the Moon’s regular phases. Earth’s shadow creates a lunar eclipse, not the monthly lunar cycle. Moon phases occur because the Moon travels around Earth and we see different portions of its sunlit half. A hands-on light-and-ball model can make this distinction much easier to understand.

One of the most fascinating aspects of astronomy is learning why the Moon changes shape throughout its phases. The Moon’s phases may follow a predictable pattern, but the science and the ways humans have learned to follow that pattern are filled with surprising details.
The Moon completes an orbit before it completes a phase cycle.
It takes the Moon about 27.3 days to orbit Earth, but approximately 29.5 days to travel from one new moon to the next. During those 27.3 days, Earth has also moved along its orbit around the Sun, so the Moon must travel a little farther to recreate the same Sun-Earth-Moon alignment. NASA explains the difference.
Everyone on Earth experiences the same lunar phase at the same time.
A person in Australia does not have a full moon while someone in Canada has a crescent. However, they see the Moon from different angles. A waxing crescent that appears illuminated on the right in much of the Northern Hemisphere generally appears illuminated on the left in the Southern Hemisphere. Near the equator, a crescent can even appear like a glowing bowl. NASA illustrates the difference.
We can see more than half of the Moon’s surface from Earth.
The Moon keeps approximately the same side facing us, but it appears to rock slightly because of its orbit and our changing viewing angle. This motion, called libration, allows careful observers to see about 59 percent of the lunar surface over time—not just 50 percent. Explore lunar libration with NASA.
The dim part of a crescent Moon is being lit by Earth.
When the entire outline of a thin crescent is faintly visible, you are seeing Earthshine. Sunlight reflects from Earth, travels to the Moon, and then reflects back toward us. From the Moon, Earth would appear nearly full when we see a thin crescent. NASA’s Moon-viewing guide explains this twice-reflected light.
The full moon is not the best phase for exploring craters.
During a full moon, sunlight strikes the Moon’s Earth-facing surface almost directly, producing very short shadows. Craters and mountains are often easier to see near the terminator—the boundary between lunar day and night—where low-angle sunlight creates long, dramatic shadows.
A lunar “day” lasts almost an Earth month.
From one sunrise to the next, a location on the Moon experiences approximately 29.5 Earth days. That means many places on the lunar surface receive roughly two weeks of continuous sunlight followed by roughly two weeks of darkness. NASA describes the lunar day.
The far side of the Moon is not permanently dark.
The phrase “dark side of the Moon” is misleading. The far side receives just as much sunlight as the side facing Earth. During a new moon, the near side is dark while most of the far side is brightly illuminated.
The enormous Moon near the horizon is mostly a trick of the brain.
Photographs taken with the same camera settings show that the Moon is nearly the same width near the horizon as it is high in the sky. Scientists call this the Moon illusion, but there is still no single explanation accepted by everyone for why our brains make the horizon Moon look so large. Read about the Moon illusion from NASA.
We do not experience an eclipse every new and full moon because the Moon’s orbit is tilted.
The Moon’s orbital path is tilted approximately five degrees from Earth’s path around the Sun. It usually passes slightly above or below the necessary alignment. Eclipses occur only when the phase and orbital crossing line up closely enough. NASA explains the tilted orbit.
The Moon is slowly moving away from us.
Measurements show that the Moon is receding from Earth by approximately 1.5 inches—or 3.8 centimeters—each year. As it moves farther away, it appears slightly smaller. In more than 600 million years, it may no longer be large enough to completely cover the Sun, ending Earth’s total solar eclipses. NASA explains this gradual change.
Lunar calendars solve the same astronomical problem in very different ways.
Twelve lunar cycles total only about 354 days—approximately 11 days shorter than a solar year. The Islamic calendar remains lunar, allowing Ramadan and other observances to move through the seasons over a cycle of about 33 solar years. The Hebrew calendar adds a thirteenth month seven times during a 19-year cycle. The traditional Chinese calendar also adds leap months, but uses both new moons and carefully calculated solar terms to determine where the extra month belongs. These are sophisticated systems designed around different cultural and religious priorities—not less accurate versions of the Gregorian calendar.
