One Sky, Four Views Foldable
Children begin with the same Orion star pattern on four flaps, then transform it into a Greek hunter, part of a Māori canoe, a Maya turtle, and a Lakota hand. Beneath each flap, they record who carried the sky knowledge, what people saw, and what meaning, lesson, or practical use was connected with it.
Constellation Perspective Model
Position paper stars at different distances. From a marked “Earth” viewpoint, the stars form a recognizable pattern—but from the side, that pattern falls apart. Children investigate whether the stars are truly close together and discover why a constellation is a pattern viewed from Earth rather than a cluster of neighboring stars.

Did You Know? Surprising Facts About Orion
Orion’s Belt is only a line from Earth’s point of view. The three stars are not sitting side by side in space. Alnitak is about 800 light-years away, Mintaka about 900, and Alnilam roughly 1,300. From another part of the galaxy, they would not form the same familiar row. NASA
One “star” in Orion’s Belt is actually five stars. Mintaka appears to be a single point of light, but it is a complex system containing five stars.
Orion contains stars at opposite ends of their lives. The Orion Nebula is producing newborn stars, while the red supergiant Betelgeuse is approaching the end of its life. Orion lets astronomers study both stellar birth and stellar aging in the same part of the sky.
The fuzzy spot in Orion’s sword is a star factory. It is the Orion Nebula, the closest large star-forming region to Earth. Thousands of stars are forming inside its clouds of gas and dust—and under dark skies, you can see the nebula without a telescope. NASA
The Orion Nebula contains baby solar systems. Astronomers have found hundreds of young stars surrounded by disks of gas and dust. These disks—called proplyds—may eventually develop into planets, offering scientists a glimpse of how our own solar system may have begun.
Betelgeuse is younger than the Sun—even though it is already dying. It is only about 10 million years old, compared with the Sun’s 4.6 billion years. Because Betelgeuse is so massive, it burns through its fuel much faster.
If Betelgeuse replaced our Sun, it would swallow the inner planets. The enormous star would extend beyond Mars and into the region of the asteroid belt.
The colors in Orion are visible to the naked eye. Betelgeuse looks orange-red because its surface is relatively cool, while Rigel appears blue-white because it is thousands of degrees hotter.
Betelgeuse is called Alpha Orionis—but it usually isn’t Orion’s brightest star. The “Alpha” label was assigned centuries ago. Rigel, officially Beta Orionis, generally shines brighter today.
The Orionid meteor shower is made from pieces of Halley’s Comet. Each October, Earth passes through debris left behind by the famous comet. The meteors appear to stream from the direction of Orion, although the particles are much closer to Earth than the constellation. NASA
Before Orion was a Greek hunter, Babylonians saw a shepherd. Ancient Mesopotamian star lists identified the constellation as the “True Shepherd of Anu,” connecting the same stars with a very different figure. British Museum
Orion’s stars also served as practical guides. In Māori astronomical traditions, Orion’s Belt is known as Tautoru. Tautoru, Puanga—or Rigel—and other stars were used in seasonal observation and ocean navigation. For some iwi, the rising of Puanga marks the Māori New Year. Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand
Modern astronomers define Orion as an area, not simply a stick figure. The International Astronomical Union divided the sky into 88 official constellations with fixed boundaries. Every object inside Orion’s boundary belongs to the constellation—even if it is not part of the familiar hunter shape. International Astronomical Union
